Plans for new Innovation Centre submitted by SRC

Plans for Southern Regional College’s new Innovation Centre on the site of the former Newry Sports Centre are being advertised.

The proposals, submitted by agents Resolve Planning on behalf of the college, would see a new two-storey centre to facilitate the relocation of SRC Model Campus at Catherine Street.

The building would “provide teaching rooms, laboratories, workshops, new management centre and office space” and “includes the retention of existing vehicular and pedestrian accesses with new one-way vehicular system throughout the site”.

A drop off area and car parking for 75 spaces, the relocation of a controlled pedestrian crossing, bus stops and some on street car parking on Patrick Street also form part of the plans.

The stone wall is to be retained along the front boundary, with the use of some stone material to construct a new wall at the rear of the site.

The application also seeks permission for the “introduction of hard and soft landscaping, [a] pedestrian plaza, outdoor seating areas, cycle parking and all associated site works”.

Earlier this year a public consultation on the multi-million pound proposal was held. A presentation at the time said that the state-of-the-art facility was “designed to foster collaboration between businesses, academia and the public sector.”

The building is designed to be sustainable and energy efficient with a focus on natural light and ventilation.

A design and access statement submitted to planners along with their application says the proposal “has been developed to facilitate consolidation of the provision on the Model Campus site”.

It adds, “The College’s Innovation Department will be accommodated in this 3,245m2 project-based learning centre that will be used to support the delivery of student enterprise and industry-based problem solving initiatives whilst maximising the use of high end resources.

"The development represents a major investment in educational facilities that will provide a modern and welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors alike.”

The site is currently being used as a car park, having been the site of the former Newry Sports Centre, which was demolished in 2021 after its purchase by the college.

In conclusion the design and access statement says that the development of the Innovation Centre “represents a significant public investment in Newry City and the wider urban area”.

It adds, "The development delivers significant environmental benefits in the creation of a modern educational facility on an existing educational space. The proposal will bring with it economic, physical and social benefits.

"The scheme will provide a long-term positive legacy for the city and wider area and should therefore be approved.”

It comes months after the proposed centre was named 'Highly Commended' for the 'Most Innovative Public Sector Project' at the 2023 Digital Construction Awards.

The awards recognise excellence across the construction industry.

The proposal, which is advertised inside this week’s Reporter, will now go before planners for a decision.
