Green fingers thrive at St. Louis

Getting in touch with nature is an often-neglected feature of modern life. However, this cannot be said of the staff and students at the St. Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel

The school polytunnel has been a hive of activity throughout the current academic year and is now ‘springing’ into life.

Led by Mr Ciaran Gallagher, students from the LSC and Ailm groups embarked on a gardening programme from last autumn. Promoting wellbeing through many facets of gardening has been a clearly defined objective and the students were very keen to get their hands dirty in the process.

Kitted up in their gardening gear, the students didn’t take too much persuading as they enthusiastically embraced the activities and overcome the challenges put before them as the seasons changed. The flurries of activities could be found in the polytunnel during breaktimes, lunchtimes and even after school.

All their hard work and resilience has been rewarded with Level 1 and 2 Attainment Certificates from the RHS School Gardening Awards programme. The efforts of these students can not only be found on their certificates, but they can be found all around the St. Louis environment. Beautiful plants can be found in many classrooms and in flowerpots around the school building, creating a happy, colourful, and healthy environment for all.
