Newry BID (Business Improvement District) is set to host a month packed full of free health and wellbeing events and activities in Newry city centre across the month of October.

With something for all the family, from baby mindfulness, Relax Kids and Charge Up for teenagers to a coffee morning for carers, gym taster sessions, yoga, competitions, and an Active Ageing programme, it promises to get us all thinking about our health and wellbeing this autumn.

There is a full programme of events available on newry.com, Newry BID’s social media and in the press, with many events bookable in advance. The events will be taking place in venues across the city from October 1-31, 2023.

Eamonn Connolly, Newry BID Manager said, “Health in the City comes hot on the heels of the successful Summer in the City campaign which hosted entertainment and events in venues across the city over the summer. We have made everything completely free, so it is accessible to all.

“We are also trying to engage people who may be concerned about their health or who want to take action but don’t know where to start; through the gym taster sessions with Pure Gym at The Quays; blood pressure checks at McKeevers Chemist on Monaghan Street; and blood pressure checks in Buttercrane with Curves.

The gym session is aimed at people who have maybe never been to a gym or are too nervous to get started on their own. Equally the yoga at Centred Soul on Hill Street will be for beginners with no experience of this type of activity and the competition for the Canal Court Hotel Spa encourage us to think about wellness also.”

Eamonn continued, “We are also delighted to engage with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, local organisations and individuals including Joanne Callan who was involved in planning this month and Lianne McCooey, both of whom are mental health champions in the local area.

Newry BID’s core values are Belong, Invest and Deliver. We hope that events like these will help many more people feel like they belong within our city centre. We hope that we can make even a small difference in the delivery of a healthier, more engaged community in the Newry area, while supporting our members who deliver services in the field of health and wellbeing.”
