Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte hosted a Civic Reception in the Canal Court Hotel on Monday 16 October, to mark the 40 th Anniversary of the outstanding commitment of Women’s Aid Armagh and Down.

Women’s Aid Armagh Down exists to challenge attitudes and beliefs which perpetuate domestic violence and offer confidential support, information, emergency accommodation for women and children affected by domestic abuse. At the reception Chairperson, Cllr Valerie Harte presented its CEO, Eileen Murphy with an inscribed crystal bowl to recognise the charity’s outstanding work in the community and for seeking through their work to promote healthy and non-abusive relationships.

Speaking at the event, Chairperson Councillor Valarie Harte said, “The work that Women’s Aid carries out throughout our district is remarkable. Tackling domestic abuse and violence remains a top priority for the Council and it is important that residents understand that domestic violence is a crime that must be tackled.

“We remain committed to working alongside key agency partners to deliver and support initiatives, services and campaigns aimed at raising awareness of matters such as domestic abuse, violence and stalking as well as highlighting the help that is always available.”

Chairperson, Cllr Harte concluded by saying, “It is an honour and privilege to be able to host this Civic Reception to mark the 40 th Anniversary of Women’s Aid, Armagh and Down and we will continue to support Women’s Aid in whatever way we can.”
