Council 'ready to play significant role in' recovery phase after flood

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Cllr Valerie Harte has welcomed the clean-up phase of the operation in Newry and Newcastle and thanked everyone who has assisted the multi-agency response to date.

“I am aware that the impact of the floods has been devastating for some of our residents and businesses,” said Councillor Harte. “We would like to thank everyone who has assisted so far from across local government and the many community and voluntary representatives.

“From the start of the emergency, Council staff have been on the ground at flooding incidents across the district, including currently in Downpatrick, and remain on site to assist residents and businesses. Council staff assisted DfI Roads and DfI Rivers, including with the distribution of sandbags for the use in constructing flood defences across the district as well as providing emergency assistance. The Council has also adapted its services wherever possible to meet the challenging circumstances.

In Newry City Centre Council staff are receiving support from Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council with the clean-up. The Council is in the process of collecting used sandbags from properties and coordinating the emptying of skips placed within the commercial area and will continue to do so as required.

A flooding recovery operation is also well underway in Newcastle residential areas as flood water recedes. Council staff there are currently being supported by Belfast City Council and Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council. The Council is in the process of collecting used sandbags from residential properties and are also providing a free bulk waste collection service for large household items.

It is advised to only start the clear up of your property and wear protective clothing when it’s safe to return after water has subsided. An electrician should check electrical appliances and a Gas Safe-registered engineer should check gas supply.

Cllr Harte also reminded residents to continue to be mindful of their safety during the recovery phase.
