A 59-year-old man arrested by detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Legacy Branch, investigating the murder of Constable Colleen McMurray and the attempted murder of her colleague in a mortar attack in Newry in 1992, has been released unconditionally.

The man had been arrested under the Terrorism Act at Birmingham Airport, with the assistance of Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands on Wednesday, February 21.

A PSNI spokesperson added: “The investigation continues.”

Mrs McMurray, 34, was a passenger in a police car hit by a mortar bomb as it travelled along Merchants Quay. She had only been married for 18 months at the time of the attack.

Her colleague survived but lost both his legs.
