The Ring of Gullion and Cooley Red Squirrel Group have encouraged people not to leave pumpkins in woodlands and forests.

Previously, people had been encouraged to leave pumpkins out to help wildlife following Halloween.

However, that is no longer the case.

According to the local squirrel group, the Woodland Trust has advised that pumpkins attract rats and disrupt fungi and that the pulp can cause digestive upsets in wild creatures not used to such food.

The hedgehog is particularly at risk, they add.

Pumpkins that have been painted and have glitter and other decoration applied are not a good idea in forests and woodlands, the group further advises.
