It was disheartening to discover on Thursday that what seemed to be a large amount of household waste was dumped along Newry Canal.

Bottles, bags and other litter were floating in a corner at the Godfrey Bridge, just in front of Grounded.

What a horrible sight it must have been for anyone visiting the Canal Court Hotel, coming out to see what Newry has to offer.

The canal deserves better than to be marred by litter and debris. It holds significant historical and environmental value, providing a haven for local wildlife such as the herons and otters who have made it their home.

It is distressing to see the consequences of irresponsible waste disposal tarnishing its banks.

However, rather than dwelling on this setback, let's work collectively to ensuring that this incident serves as a wake-up call for positive change.

Keeping the Canal clean is a shared responsibility. Every individual can make a difference by disposing of their waste responsibly and encouraging others to do the same.

Full credit must go to the staff at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for acting promptly to clean the mess up after we reported it on Thursday afternoon.

If you see the canal being in need of a tidy up then give them a call on 0330 137 4000.
