Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady has told Chris Heaton-Harris the British government must step up now and support families and businesses affected by recent flooding.

Mr Brady met the Secretary of State alongside other Sinn Féin MPs.

Afterwards the Newry and Armagh MP said: “Families and businesses are crying out for emergency relief and financial support as recent flooding has caused widespread damage and has devastated businesses, communities and homes.

“I told the British Secretary of State, Government support should include help with refurbishment costs. It should also provide support for workers at risk of redundancy, compensation for loss of trade as well as support for businesses to get back on their feet and trade temporarily.

“We need an easily-accessible relief scheme put in place now by the British government to assist households and businesses, and to protect jobs and community facilities.

“It is disgraceful that we are without an Executive which would allow us to help our communities to deal with this and other pressures they are facing. Those affected by the recent flooding should not suffer as a result of the boycott of the Executive by one party.

“No efforts should be spared in protecting vulnerable businesses, families and communities facing this enormous and unforeseen financial pressure.

“Sinn Féin will continue to press the British government to provide additional resources to immediately support the families and businesses affected by flooding.”
