Sinn Féin Councillor Geraldine Kearns has condemned a ‘reckless’ petrol bomb attack which took place on a home on Drumgullion Avenue in Newry on Wednesday morning.

The Newry City councillor said: “The petrol bomb attack on a home on Drumgullion Avenue... could have caused serious injury or death and I condemn it.

“This was a reckless attack which posed a real threat to the lives of those in the house and to their neighbours.

“There is absolutely no place in society for these actions, those responsible have shown a total disregard for the local community.

“I am appealing for anyone with information on this attack to bring it forward to the police.”Police said they received a report of the attack at around 6.05am on Wednesday that two petrol bombs were thrown at a house in the area, causing a small fire in the back garden.

"Officers attended alongside colleagues from NIFRS who extinguished the fire. Thankfully there were no reports of any injuries," said Inspector McCormack.

“Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and we would appeal to anyone with any information to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 158 of 18/10/23.

“Alternatively, you can submit a report online using the non-emergency reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/.”
