The Newry Cancer Research Committee held their annual big breakfast in Newry on Friday.

It proved very successful as they raised a considerable sum of money which will be greatly appreciated by the Cancer Research Centre at Belfast’s City Hospital.

A spokesperson said, “We were delighted to welcome so many of our regular supporters, renew old friendships and make new ones.

"The Big Breakfast is the one fundraising occasion when we are afforded the opportunity to thank people personally and perhaps hear how cancer has affected them or someone close to them.

“Without the generosity and support of the local business community, the general public and our volunteers, our Big Breakfast would not be so successful each year.

"The Committee is particularly grateful to Re-Gen Waste and Recycling for their generous sponsorship for the past few years, and to Newry, Mourne & Down District Council who generously sponsor a number of breakfasts each year.

"We are also fortunate to have such an attractive and central venue as Bellini’s in which to host our Big Breakfast and we thank the managers Gavin, Aibhin and their staff for opening much earlier than usual to provide a delicious fry.”

The Newry Cancer Research Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the many local businesses, the local community, their many volunteers and their committee members past and present for their generosity and support, not only for their Big Breakfasts but also our many other fundraising events over more than 40 years which enabled us to achieve raising the truly amazing sum of £1,000,000 in January 2023. Well done everyone.

Research has achieved much but more is needed. Cancer is no respecter of age, gender, class, colour or creed, so research is a necessity. not a luxury.

Early diagnosis is paramount in the treatment of all cancers. Together we will beat cancer.
