The local Easter Commemoration committee Has officially launched the annual Easter Lily campaign and announced this year's commemorative events in Newry.

Speaking at the launch John Stewart said: “Every year, Republicans across Ireland and internationally will come together to remember all those who have played their part in the struggle for Irish freedom.

“At a local level it is an opportunity for us to stand side by side with the families of our patriot dead and join them in remembrance of those they have lost.

“Everyone has a right to remember their dead with dignity and respect, for Republicans, the Easter lily is a symbol of this remembrance.

SYMBOL

“The lily was chosen for this symbol as it was already an international flower of requiem, while also sharing the same colours as the Irish national flag.

John Stewart provided a history of the Easter Lily and explained how it had become the symbol of the Easter Rising and resistance throughout the years.

“I would encourage people to come and join us for our annual Easter commemoration events here in Newry city and across Newry and Armagh over the Easter period, and to wear their Easter Lily with pride.

“Our local activists will be promoting the lily across the area during the Easter period, or anyone who wants a lily can contact their local Sinn Féin representative.”

A number of events are planned for the Easter weekend and details for these will be released very soon.
