​Tributes to Charles Digney Jr as funeral director laid to rest

Newry funeral director, Charles Digney Jr, has been laid to rest.

​The 40-year-old died peacefully at his home in Saval on Friday.

A funeral notice said Charles Jr was the “much loved husband of Clare and dear daddy of Anna, Conall and Cillian. Beloved son of Charles and Mary, and dear brother of James and Brendan”.

His funeral mass took place in St. Colman’s Church, Shinn on Monday with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

The notice added that his death was “deeply regretted by his sorrowing wife, children, parents, brothers, sisters-in-law Grainne and Pauline, brother-in-law Michael, father-in-law Michael, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, family circle and friends”.

Donations in lieu of flowers were requested for The Irish Pilgrimage Trust, c/o his family.

Charles Digney Sr commenced his funeral business in 1976 operating from Sugar Island in Newry.

In recent years his sons Charles, James and Brendan had started working in the business and today the business is based from their funeral home at Sugarhouse Quay in Newry just around the corner from their original premises.

In 2003 they commenced serving Banbridge and surrounding areas from an office in Old Kenlis Street in the town.

Tributes were paid to Charles Jr online, including one which said: “Charles was a highly respected Chartered Surveyor and industry colleague. May he rest in peace.”
