A controversial improvement plan for Newry swimming pool has been approved this week with the council now seeking a contractor for works.

The local authority signed off on a business case for “swimming pool moving floors and covers” as well as work to be carried out on pool tiles.

However, all details of the plans were held behind closed doors at the active and healthy communities committee of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC).

Following a confidential session, committee deputy chairperson, Oonagh Magennis (Sinn Fein) said: “On the item for swimming pool covers and moving floors, members agreed to approve the business case as outlined in the officer’s report and to commence with the procurement and appointment of a contractor and supplier.

“On Newry Leisure Centre swimming pool tiles, it was agreed to approve core sampling works of Newry Leisure Centre swimming pool at a cost outlined in the officer’s report.”

NMDDC officials had previously signed off on an eight week closure of the swimming pool in October 2022 without debate in chambers.

The shut down operation was due to take place over the Christmas period.

However, outraged councillors swiftly moved to force a u-turn on the decision and argued that they should be brought in to any future consultation on the leisure facility.

The Local Democracy Service understands that the plans include repairs to address loose tiling on the pool floor with the swimming facility required to be drained for work to be carried out.
