Since the Windsor Framework was agreed, any catch of fish moving from GB to NI must be registered and traced through a sanitary inspection facility.

Fish and fishery goods which arrive in NI, but cannot be cleared due to non-compliance with import requirements, will be subject to enforcement procedures and will not be allowed to enter NI.

At this week’s environment committee, Mournes DUP rep, Henry Reilly said: “Can I ask the director of sustainability and environment, do you know if there has been any issues with fish coming in from GB into Warrenpoint?

“Is there any problem with it getting through?

“It’s just there have been issues in other areas, that have been causing economic damage to the fish factories in Kilkeel.”

A council officer responded: “At this time it has not come to my attention, but I will look in to it and come back to you.”
