Sinn Féin councillor Geraldine Kearns has urged the new council cleansing task force to make tackling dog fouling its top priority.

Speaking after the first meeting of this new group, the Newry City councillor said: “We welcome the formation of this new Task force by council, recognising the serious cleansing issues across the district that must be addressed.

“At our initial meeting I stressed that tackling the scourge of dog fouling, particularly in Newry City, must be a priority.

“Both businesses and residents have been in touch with us to raise concerns about the amount of dog fouling locally.

“Dog litter carries a number of diseases that can cause severe health conditions, from coughing and fever to swollen lymph nodes or even blindness.

“The council must ensure that it takes a decisive, proactive approach to tackling the issue of dog fouling across the district so that our communities can be kept clean and safe for all.

“This is a priority for Sinn Féin."
