Warrenpoint community hub takes significant step forward
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s (NMDDC) active and healthy communities (AHC) committee has opened a call for expressions of interest in evaluating the site.
The Warrenpoint Health and Well-being Hub site at Clonallon Park is due to see construction commence this year after planning permission was submitted in July 2023.

Hide AdCommittee deputy chairperson, Oonagh Magennis (Sinn Fein) said: “Whilst in committee (confidential session) the following was agreed.
“In respect of Warrenpoint Health and Well-being Hub, it was approved to open a call for expressions of interest for the area identified in the report, in line with council’s policy and procedures of its sports and facilities management and leasing, to obtain an evaluation for the site for the purposes of a long term lease.”
The AHC committee’s decision comes just days since the council refused to support Down GAA’s application for EU funding for its new centre of excellence, as members agreed it conflicted with NMDDC plans to develop the Warrenpoint hub.
The enterprise, regeneration and tourism (ERT) committee took the refusal decision on Down GAA during confidential session on March 11.

Hide AdNo AHC reports were made available to the media on the Warrenpoint hub, due to the matter being discussed away from the public eye on Tuesday (March 19) night in the Downpatrick chamber.
However, the council has previously released its plans to develop a new two-storey community hub building to include a four-court hall, changing areas, meeting rooms and activity rooms.
The building plan incorporates features such as a sensory room, children’s activity room with dedicated outdoor terrace, music room and dance studio.
According to its website, NMDDC expects to complete the major project by December 2025.
