Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard has called on DfI Roads to address the safety of Kilkeel Road as a matter of priority following the collapse of the road side verge during flooding last October.

The South Down MP has described it as ‘unacceptable’ that 10 weeks since the incident, action is yet to be taken by DfI Roads and says it’s time to act now before an accident occurs.

Speaking following a visit to the site, Mr Hazzard said: “The local community are growing increasingly concerned over the safety of the Kilkeel Road - with some residents saying that they refuse to travel on the road until something is done.

“It’s clear to see there has been extensive damage done to the local infrastructure and a significant repair job is needed. It’s unacceptable that 10 weeks since the collapse, DfI Roads have yet to take action to address these concerns.

“The traffic lights are simply not enough to keep the community safe and we must see credible action now before a serious accident occurs.

“I have requested a site meeting with DfI Roads to urge the re-establishment of the verge and see work started as soon as possible to make this road safe again. There can be no more delay.”
