Sinn Féin Councillor Valerie Harte has welcomed confirmation from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council that it will include the Crieve Road in their Active Travel Plan.

Speaking after a site meeting with the Council's Sustainability Officer, Councillor Harte said: "The Crieve Road is widely used by pedestrians, particularly children going to and from school, and has become increasingly dangerous in recent years.

"We have been lobbying for improved safety of the road for some time now and it is very welcome that Council have now formally acknowledged the need for this.

Her party colleague, Liz Kimmins MLA added: “Improving safety on the Crieve Road is something we have been working towards for many years.

“The Council will now work with DFI in an effort to have suitable works carried out to address these issues as part of the Active Travel plan.

"We hope this will see the installation of a footpath and other measures, however Councillor Harte and I will continue to press both Council and DFI to ensure these works are delivered for all road users at the earliest possible stage."
