“I was grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to a motion on addiction and drug related deaths this week in the Assembly. Nobody chooses a life of addiction, and nobody is born into this world an addict. You would be far stretched to find a single person or family who has not been impacted by addiction, be it to alcohol, substance’s, prescription drugs or even gambling.

“Addiction whispers promises of comfort, escape or even connection. But it’s grasp is ultimately suffocating, not just to the addict but also to those who love and care for them. A glass of wine to escape the day, a joint to relax. Over time the behaviour becomes a compulsive need, a priority that overshadows everything and everyone else around you.

“Recovery and escape from drug addiction is a challenging journey and is one that can lead to hope, healing and transformation.

“It can be isolating and debilitating and to others it may even seem selfish. The good news is that help is available. Over my time as an MLA I have seen the exceptional work and power of charity and voluntary organisations in our area such as Cuan Mhuire, Davina’s Ark and Alcoholics/Gamblers Anonymous. I have been inspired by the many personal and heartfelt stories I have heard from recovering and recovered addicts and most importantly their families who are all too often a lifeline to those on their journey to freedom from addiction.

“To those who are struggling I want to simply say reclaiming your life is possible, take the first step and reach out for help when you are ready to do so no matter how daunting it may seem.

“The SDLP are laser focused on our vision of improving access to treatment, a cross-departmental approach and ultimately towards eradicating the grip and stigma of addiction once and for all.”
