Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins has said more help is needed to support carers and in particular female carers, some of whom are being forced to quit their jobs to look after sick or disabled loved ones.

Reacting to a new report from Carers NI and the Women’s Regional Consortium, the Sinn Féin health spokesperson said: “Carers, particularly female carers, are being forced to reduce their hours and in the worst cases leave employment.

"This is having a significant impact on carers’ finances, as well as their physical and mental health.

“This report outlines the pressing need to invest in our social care service, to strengthen workers rights and to improve childcare and education services.

“I welcome the Economy Minister’s commitment this week to improving workers rights through legislation and I am hopeful this will include additional rights for carers.

“I will continue to work with the Health Minister and the other parties to look at ways to support those carers and families in need.”
