The Newry City Councillor said: “A number of people in rural areas such as Meigh, Killean, Killeavy and others have raised their concerns about the number and size of potholes on local roads.

“Of particular concern was a number of potholes on the main road through Meigh. While one of these has been patched, there are still issues, both in Meigh and other areas that must be fixed as soon as possible.

“However, a number of roads in the areas outside of Meigh, such as the Ballymacdermott and the Burnish road are also plagued with a number of large potholes and other issues.

“This is one of the very real consequences that over a decade of Tory cuts has had on local communities.

“I welcome the recent investment by my party colleague, John O’Dowd, as Infrastructure Minister, of £8.1M to begin to tackle some of these issues, as well as an additional investment of £1M specifically to target potholes.

“We will continue working to improve road safety and quality for all across Newry and South Armagh.”
