SDLP leader Colum Eastwood wishes outgoing Newry councillor well

The SDLP will begin the process to fill the vacancy on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council following the resignation of Cllr Michael Savage to take up a new position as CEO of Newry Chamber of Commerce.

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MP said his party “places on record our sincere gratitude to Michael Savage for his long service to the party and to the people he has represented in Newry city.

"This is an exciting new opportunity and I know that he will approach it with enthusiasm and great experience.

Justin McNulty MLA added: “Michael has been good servant to the people of Newry who elected him and leaves big shoes to fill. He understands the issues facing people and businesses in our community and I have no doubt he will be an asset to the chamber of commerce.

“I look forward to working with him and the chamber as we seek to build opportunity, create jobs and deliver prosperity for people here.

“I wish Michael and his family well for the future.”

An SDLP Spokesperson said: “Cllr Savage is expected to stand down as a councillor ahead of taking up his new role with the Chamber at the end of the month. The party will now begin the process to fill the vacancy in the Newry DEA.”
