The South Down MP said the school and local community “have waited too long” and it’s time to get this important project moving

Mr Hazzard said: “Over five years since the announcement that St. Mary’s Barr was successful in their application for the School Enhancement Programme, we have yet to see boots on the ground.

“In March 2023, this project was subsequently shelved due to budget constraints, which was met by widespread frustration in the local community.

“With the school being identified at the time as the highest priority, reflecting the urgent need to see investment to improve standards - I have written to Minister for Education to ask he puts this project firmly back on the agenda.

“The local community have waited too long and they deserve access to first class educational facilities that allow our young people to have the best start in life.”

Cllr Kate Murphy added: “With the restoration of the Executive there is hope in the local community that this much needed capital investment can be secured; and St Mary’s PS can finally move on to [the] construction phase.

“It’s time for the Department for Education to make good on its commitment to deliver a new, modern, fit for purpose school that meets the needs of the pupils, staff and wider community.”
