Apartment and shop plan for Newry City Centre
21 July 2021
The site of the former P&R Motors showroom in the centre of Newry is set to be redeveloped into a new apartment complex.
Local building contractor, Kelly Brothers, has secured planning approval for 35 new apartments and three ground floor retail units at the junction of Merchant’s Quay and Canal Street.
The site comprises the buildings and yard associated with the former P&R Motor Sales business. The buildings were once operated as a car showroom with associated servicing, garage and ancillary offices whilst the yard areas were used as the showroom forecourt, customer parking and car washing area. Following the closure of the car garage the front section of the building was occupied as office space. The buildings will now be demolished as part of the project.
The plans will now bring the entire site into productive use with the new development designed as a single four storey building fronting onto Merchants Quay and turning the corner onto Canal Street.
There will be associated car and cycle parking, bin store, servicing areas, amenity space, and landscaping and access arrangements from Merchants Quay and associated raised kerbing.
The proposal, which was submitted in July 2020, was officially approved by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council two weeks ago (July 7).To read more subscribe to our online Newspaper
