Newry Firms restore statue of Our Lady

Two Newry companies have been praised for their voluntary efforts to restore a vandalised religious statue. 

Last week Modern Fireplace repaired the damaged statue of Our Lady in the grounds of St Brigid’s Church in Newry and repainted the other religious figures on the Calvary scene.

This week, DM Powerwashing will add the finishing touches to restore the statues to their former glory.

Earlier this month, a hole was punched in the face of the Our Lady statue.  It was then toppled over despite being concreted into the ground.

The wanton desecration caused outrage throughout the Newry area.  At the time, city councillor Gavin Malone said the vandalism was an ‘attack on the community’.

Now he has thanked the two local businesses for their voluntary work to restore the popular statues.
