Trips to Windsor Park haven’t been very fruitful for Newry City since their return to the top flight, and that remains the case after they suffered a 6-0 trouncing at the hands of Linfield on Saturday afternoon.

The south Belfast did most of the damage in the first half, notching four of their six goals before the break.

Matthew Fitzpatrick and Kyle McClean had them two ahead before the half hour mark, before a Kirk Miller penalty goal and a second from McClean had the game over as a contest.

Linfield would go on to add two more in the second half, via captain Jamie Mulgrew and 16-year-old Braiden Graham – who scored with his first touch after being introduced from the bench.

There is solace for City however, as Ballymena United lost 2-0 at home to Carrick Rangers, meaning that Newry remain just two points behind the eleventh-placed side with six games to go.

Newry City host Crusaders next Saturday, before the league heads into the end-of-season split.
