Newry City earned their first win in 20 games this afternoon, as they defeated Carrick Rangers 1-0, cutting the gap on Ballymena United at the bottom of the table in the process.

The game looked set to peter out to goalless draw after both sides several chances, with Carrick Rangers' Joe Crowe having a shot cleared off the line by Ryan McGivern, before James Teelan rattled the crossbar in the second half.

At the other end, Newry's best chance came to Fra McCaffrey midway through the second period, but he blazed wide in a one on one.

However, McCaffrey took his second opportunity of the game to score the winner on 82 minutes. John McGovern found Lorcan Forde with a cross-field pass, and his cross was finished into the net by McCaffrey from two yards out.

Newry held on from there, with Barney McKeown and Ryan McGivern superb in defence, and with Ballymena losing 4-2 against Crusaders, the relegation battle has been blown wide open.

Following the win, McCaffrey spoke to the Newry Reporter to reflect on his winning goal and his short time at the club, and he says that the team have the belief that they are good enough to stay in the Premiership.
