Magill is the first winner in Cloverhill November Series

Cloverhill Golf Club notes by Joe Pilkington

The opening round of four in the 12-hole November Series got off to a blistering start in more ways than one.

A late surge of interest from members wanting to join the competition on Saturday and Sunday led to the scrapping of the six-person teams that had been selected and a new draw expanding the league to 21 teams will be made.

Each week’s play starts from Monday to Sunday, with the only stipulation being that your card must be marked by a person also participating in the league. A person’s best three cards will count towards the Overall Individual winner as well as counting in the six-person team event. Christmas Dinner provision is the aim of the November Series, with the four prizes to be won: Winner – Turkey; Second - Ham; Third – A bottle of spirits of choice; Fourth - bottle of prosecco.

A rainy start on Saturday morning was a deterrent, but soon cleared to a fine afternoon, with Sunday once the early fog lifted leading to one of the better days for a while.

The par 46 12-hole format provided a really good feel factor as over 50 per cent of the field played better than their handicap and even Sean who took a dip in the shuck at 10, managed a level par round.

The quest for the four prizes on offer was reserved for those in the 30 plus points bracket. Club Secretary Paddy Malone (5) was the first to lay down a marker with a 31 point return, with David MacNamara (11) and Christopher Reel (6) falling a point short of that target. Late on Saturday, Paddy was toppled off top spot by Raymond Kelly (12) with 32 points.

On Sunday, Kevin Morrissey (8) came up a point shy of the leader, who was soon joined at the top by Barry McKinley (8). Paddy was displaced from the top four once the competition winning score of 33 points arrived.

But it was not all bad for Paddy, as he would not be deprived of his Christmas dinner, as Past Captain and father-in-law Noel Magill (16) was the man with the 33 points. So, after a terrific start to the November Series the four festive prizes went to Noel Magill (16) 33 points, Raymond Kelly (12) 32 points countback from Barry McKinley (8) with Paddy losing yet another countback verdict this time to Kevin Morrissey (8) 31 points.
