Caroline O’Hanlon’s Rhinos are on the charge as they run up the highest score in their British SuperLeague history

Bessbrook ace Caroline O’Hanlon’s Leeds Rhinos ran up the highest score in their short British SuperLeague history as they picked up their first victory of the current campaign in emphatic fashion in Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts hammered Scottish visitors Strathclyde Sirens 73-34 with head coach Liana Leota having the luxury of withdrawing what she has branded her ‘world-class’ triumvirate of England legend Geva Mentor, O’Hanlon and Malawi shooting star Joyce Mvula.

Mvula had netted 47 of her 50 shots before being substituted but there was still no respite for Sirens as her replacement Amy Braithwaite nailed all but one of her 16 attempts at goal after coming on for the last quarter.

Harriet Jones scored 11 from 12 in the first half before giving way at goal attack to Northern Ireland’s Emma Magee, who missed her only shot but was credited with seven feeds to the rampant Mvula and, subsequently, Braithwaite.

Rhinos skipper Mentor came off for the final quarter with Emma’s younger sister Michelle Magee returning to the court to take over the captaincy and slotting into the back circle alongside Australian Zoe Davies, who won Player of the Match.

A shock omission against Cardiff Dragons in Sheffield the previous Saturday when Rhinos recovered from a bad start but ultimately lost on the agonising scoreline of 55-54, Michelle Magee had been brought back into the starting seven for the visit of Sirens.

The big Belfast woman started at wing defence with Cassie Howard moving forward to centre at the expense of underwhelming Welsh mid-courter Celyn Emanuel and Northern Ireland captain O’Hanlon continuing at wing attack.

With the partisan support of a capacity crowd, Rhinos got off to an impressive start as they outscored fellow winless side Sirens 18-6 in the opening period and extended their advantage to 37-17 by half-time.

Emanuel had replaced Howard shortly before the long interval, with the latter returning at wing defence for Michelle Magee going into the second half as the latter’s sister Emma took over from Jones as secondary shooter.

Scottish international Sarah MacPhail made her first SuperLeague appearance for Rhinos when introduced at wing defence during the third quarter with Amelia Hall coming on for O’Hanlon, but the one-way traffic continued.

O’Hanlon’s former Manchester Thunder team-mate Mvula scored all the goals as Rhinos won that penultimate period 21-6 and it was 15-11 in the final quarter, which saw Davies – who was credited with eight gains in the game – move back to the goalkeeper position.

It was a relief for Rhinos to break their duck, and they did so in stunning style against a struggling Sirens side who badly missed Mvula’s Malawi counterpart Towera Vinkhumbo in the back circle.

South African Sammy Ngubane netted 18 of her 20 shots for a team featuring a number of Scottish internationals but Rhinos will face a much tougher game this Saturday away to champions Loughborough Lightning (6pm, BBC iPlayer).
