Calling all 14 to 17 year olds!

It’s well known that early life experiences can sow the seeds for a lifelong love of nature. Why not start the year with a digital detox and join our AONB and Geopark Youth Rangers Programme, which will begin in February.

Applications are now open for the Ring of Gullion and Strangford and Lecale Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in the environment to get out and explore these special places. The initiative is led by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and offers young volunteers new opportunities for exploration, learning and adventure in the great outdoors over a period of five days.

Given a growing emphasis on nature’s recovery, training the next generation of countryside rangers has never been more important for the future of our national landscapes. Led by qualified and experienced outdoor leaders, the programme will provide young people with meaningful and fun activities such as first aid, outdoor survival skills and bush craft, canoeing, navigation, practical conservation skills and much more. They will also have the opportunity to meet up with the youth rangers from the other AONB group and enjoy shared activities.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte said, “This is a wonderful opportunity, enabling the next generation to experience the wide range of skills and careers opportunities that may be open to them in the future, enabling them to look after special places like our AONBs and our wider environment.”

“The young people of the district get to experience all that our AONBs have to offer; learning how Council officers and our partners work to conserve and protect important habitats and species; learning new skills and making new friends. All while enjoying the benefits of being in the outdoors! If you are a young person who meets the criteria, I would encourage you to apply and take part in this free programme.”

Chairperson Cllr Valerie Harte added, “We want this programme to support and help to inspire the next generation of nature lovers, who hopefully one day will go on to help protect these precious spaces that are vital for the health and wellbeing of us all”.

The AONB and Geopark Youth Ranger programme aims to provide the young people of the Ring of Gullion and Strangford and Lecale with a deeper understanding and appreciation for their local area, inspiring them to learn and care about their local environment, while also providing them with the skills necessary to safely explore the rural/coastal landscapes.

The programme is part funded by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Ards and North Down Borough Council, and is free for all to attend. Visit www.ringofgullion.org to learn more and apply. Applications close 26 January 2024.
