Shock and sadness at sudden passing of Newry entertainer Rose-Marie Kane

Tributes have poured in for Newry entertainer Rose-Marie, who has died.

She has been remembered as a “showbiz legend” and a “massive” star.

An announcement on Rose-Marie’s Facebook page said: “It is with heavy hearts & enormous great sadness, that we have to announce the sudden passing of our much loved Rose-Marie, in her beloved second home of Blackpool.”

Originally from Cloughogue and the eldest of six children, Rose-Marie Kane became a well-known personality on TV and radio in the 1980s and 1990s.

She sold out the London Palladium on several occasions and was voted the most popular singer at the International Music Award.

A former judge in two series of the BBC talent show Go For It, and appeared in a number of other TV shows including The Royal Variety Show and Shooting Stars.

Amongst the stars paying tribute was ’Allo ’Allo star Vicki Michelle, who said she was “upset and shocked” at the passing of her “beautiful friend”.

"Known her for over forty years,” she said. “She was with me a couple of weeks ago. Laughing, singing a fabulous ball of energy. Always lit up the room. Can’t believe it. RIP gorgeous friend.”

Heartbeat actress Trisha Penrose said: “I am absolutely heartbroken to lose my dear friend Rose-Marie RIP my dear heart. We were only together this time last week in Blackpool. I’m going to miss you SO much xxx”

Radio DJ Danny Baker paid tribute, saying: “A glorious turn. A proper belter in the best sense. My mum and dad's favourite.”

Singer Linda Nolan posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she was “absolutely shocked, saddened and devastated to hear about the passing of Rose Marie”.

“We worked together many a time over the years, including the musical Pump Boys and Dinettes, with the fabulous Bobby Crush.

“Sending love and condolences to the family, she will be missed.

Locally, tributes have come from Liz Kimmins MLA, who said she was “shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Cloughogue native and showbiz legend Rose-Marie Kane.

“Rose-Marie was a household name, known for her fabulous singing voice and talent on the stage, who had millions of fans all over the world.

“My deepest condolences to her mother Ann, and the wider Kane family at this very sad time. May Rose rest in peace.”

There are no funeral details yet, however it is believed that it will take place in Newry.
