Warrenpoint 85 (5.5pts) Rathfriland 79 (1.5pts)

Warrenpoint continued their winning start to the season, plucking victory from the jaws of defeat winning by six shots from the very last bowl of the game. Eamon McLoughlin’s rink where always in control of their match against Lorna Morrow winning by 23 shots to 16; but with five ends to go they were the only rink in black for the Point, who trailed the overall score at that stage by seventeen points. The revival came on the rink skipped by Seamus Gibney, where he, Frank McCarthy, Ciaran Carr and Thomas Hanna staged a massive recovery in the last three ends, claiming eight shots to get a tie against John Dobbin 20, shots apiece.

Lee O Loughlin’s rink, were well beaten by 25 shots to 18. This eighteen shots proved vital though, since in the final end the Warrenpoint rink got three shots to reduce the winning margin to seven shots and this meant that the scores were level, with the rink of Keith Tohill, Ian Gilmour, and Barney and Darren O’Hare who were all square 18 all, with two ends to go against the rink of Herbie Malcomson. Keith showed his metal and each of these two ends scored three shots each to win by six shots ensuring the overall score was the same in Warrenpoint’s favour. The match was kindly sponsored by Milltown Electrical

The NIBA Championship knockout tournament also started with mixed results. Eamon Mc Loughlin had a good 21-16 shots victory away to Mark Lowry of Glengormley in the Open Junior Singles, but unfortunately Thomas Hanna lost by five shots in the Open Singles tournament to Sydenham’s, Lee Carson. Both rinks in the tournament, skipped by Seamus Gibney and Lee O’Loughlin, lost out on Friday, losing to Holywood and Finaghy respectively.

Next week the Saturday side will either be a home Irish Cup game against Mossley, but there is some doubt if the latter will be able to fulfil the fixture. If so a league match will take place in Belfast to Castleton. The Vets play on Monday away to Banbridge, the Midweek team are home to Rathfriland on Tuesday and on Wednesday the Super Sixes group matches commence
